My story begins strange but true quarter century ago, when I was sixteen. I had just hitchhiked back to Interstate 90 as sunset. Last night had been captured only in the country back on the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park in freak snowstorm in May. A brown bear kicked the ground outside my tent in the middle of the night, scared half to death. But that's another story.

This strange-but-true story begins with that I was on the side of the freeway ramp, thumb out. Even here in the valley near Livingston had snow on the flowers lilac, and my shoes courts were still wet from stumbling (lost) through the mountains during the day. After an hour or two, a coach and last, and so is how I met Violet.

It was difficult to determine their age, but the stories she told, I assumed he was in his fifties. She was home from the trial of his brother in Bozeman. When asked what was being tried on, she said: "He killed his girlfriend," and if I doubted it, turned the newspaper into the seat. There she was on the front page with the title "sister says he should be hanged."

"We just cut up for no good reason," he said. Not knowing what to say, I said nothing. Although he seemed perfectly comfortable talking about it, she politely changed the subject.

"Having a hard time getting rides here?" she asked. I said I had waited for a while. "That is because a few years ago a man was murdered by a hitchhiker on the right highway to Yellowstone, "he said." They found the hitchhiker in the woods near of the road, the man's heart roasted over a fire. "

"I guess that explains why it is difficult to get rides," I agree.

Violet only had trouble with a hitchhiker once, he said. "He was even younger than you, and he drew a knife and tried to rob me. "When I asked what he was doing, he replied nonchalantly," Well, I took out my pistol and told him it was better behave if wanted a ride. "That seemed fair, I agreed.

She told me about the last time I was camping in Yellowstone, in the fifties, when her husband was alive. They and others saw a missile came from the sky and hit a mountain, causing an earthquake. Army officials came and told everyone in the area that was a national security issue, and he could not say a word about it. I nodded and asked a few more details.

Then was the history of UFOs. An alien ship had hovered over them for another camping trip, to pick up their trailers in the beam of a "tractor" and lifting Pull into the car, in the sky. He fell in a nearby field, and the officer, who was driving behind them at the time, I saw everything.

Violet let spend the night at his home in the room of his brothers. In the morning, before driving me back to the highway, even offered to let me carry any of its brothers clothes cowboy boots because, "He's not going to need more." I refused.

Later in the year, except at home in Michigan I received a letter from Violet, wish me a Merry Christmas. He had prepared a table on top of a dog in a spacesuit, which she says "Space Dog". While So I discovered that there had been an earthquake in the Yellowstone area, when they declared they had seen the missile, and had been strong enough to form a new lake.

I was still assuming that the hitchhiker murderer, at least, an exaggeration. Not so. Years later I learned grizzly all the details in the news, as they were leaving the murderer free, now that he was healthy. Amid the publicity, the authorities were having difficulty find a city to put it in.

Today, I have not read or heard anything about a spacecraft that includes camping trailers, but I'm waiting. Who knows? Montana is full of strange stories, but true.

Steve Gillman hit the road at sixteen, and traveled the U.S. and Mexico alone at 17. Now 40, he travels with his wife Ana, whom he met in Ecuador. For travel stories, tips and a free e-book, visit: http://www.EverythingAboutTravel.com
