Tent Beach

Is it legal to camp in a tent on the beach of Lake Michigan?

My boyfriend and I are poor college students, so we are trying to find an activity very cheap, but for a short relaxing weekend getaway summer. We would like a tent on the beach of Lake Michigan (near the area Grand Haven), but we're not sure if this is legal or not. We are planning to start a fire or anything, just want to hang out for a night on the beach. Will we run the risk of being arrested or something? If that's a no-go, everyone is relatively inexpensive vacation any other suggestions?

i dont know ... But I am sure if called to an office in Lake Michigan that will tell you, if it is legal and can not be too cheap.
