Burma is a part of British India and later became an independent country on 4 January 1948.
Since then one of the countries India's neighbors.
In 1989, the country's name was changed to the Union of Myanmar and the capital Rangoon was renamed Yangon.
When I think of Myanmar, remember that Mr. U Thant the former UN Secretary General in 1961.
I was a graduate student at the time.
I used to hear his speeches on the radio and read in the newspapers.
I like the thought provoking speeches.
Today the people of Burma are seeking in India and other democratic countries and aim at the transformation.
But the iron grip of the military junta are the stumbling block.
It was in June 1990 first free elections took place and of the National League for Democracy won by a large majority but the army was reluctant to relinquish power.
Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader, won the Nobel Peace Prize and the world's most famous political prisoner was placed under house arrest since 1989 until 1995.
For too long we have not heard much of Myanmar.
In general, the generals used to give a report on development activities in the international media.
But recently, Myanmar is in the news in a big way.
Violent protests arose not the streets of Yangon.
The military regime tried to control the protest march by the clearing of the news, cell phone connections and connectivity.
In spite of their attempts to press and local people must be able to transmit the videos of actual events to electronic media that shone worldwide.
The world came to know the atrocities imposed unacceptable to protesters.
The repress demonstrators angry international community.
Moreover, even Buddhist monks were in the streets demanding democracy for Myanmar.
The United Nations condemned the violence and called for the regime to end its bloody crackdown.
Myanmar is a multiethnic country of about 52 million people in 676,553 square kilometers.
In general, Myanmar is known as the rice bowl of the Far East.
This is a major agricultural country like India, with a variety of crops such as cane sugar and peanuts.
Myanmar's future depends on a military regime, but in a decent democracy rule by the people.

Condoleeza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State advocated the extension of democracy and freedom worldwide.
Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Belarus, Zimbabwe and Myanmar are the six countries, UF wanted to bring democracy and destroy tyranny.
Myanmar has 30 trillion cubic feet estimated untapped in the province of Arakan and its sea-board.
China and India, large neighbors Myanmar are very cautious in expressing their views openly keep an eye on gas reserves.
The military government very well use the income from gas sales for arms purchases.
The repress demonstrators was criticized by leftist parties and appreciated the stand taken by the Government of India (GOI).
India's relationship with the ruling military government was forced to more than one occasion.

World politics is so complex that only smart politicians with experience can handle taking into account their own interests.
All these complicated political situations determine the fate of a nation.
Since the recent rise in Myanmar seems that there is hope for this country to see the light of freedom and democracy.
Let peace and freedom for monks in Myanmar and the masses happy.
