How do I properly store a kerosene lamp?

A few months ago I had to clean the storage unit of my late father. We found and used a kerosene lamp for light at night. I'd like to save, but I know that these things are not safe to leave unattended in a storage unit. I poured kerosene and I have it on a shelf in my utility room with the flip open.
