Inflating Camping

How do these 'self-inflating "camping mats work? Inflation and deflation?
To inflate, There is a valve in a corner, when I was flat out and unscrew the valve, air is sucked, when filled, they just adjusted the valve to keep the enclosed air, to deflate, undo the valve again and roll up the carpet. As you roll it up to squeeze all the air thats inside. Then, when you reach the end only tighten the valve to maintain the air. I've been camping for years and worked in several shops and camping persoanlly do not think you upto much. I appreciate that there are people out there who swear by them, but to me they are more trouble than they're worth. The offspring are usually quite expensive, and cheap are no more useful than a foam mat. The carpet foam costs much less and is much lighter in my opinion, much easier to hike with. If you want a little more comfort than ever could take two foam mattresses and wouldnt be taking up much space or adding much weight. If I go for a while and have a vehicle then bring an inflatable me as much more comfortable and with a vehicle weight isn't really a problem. Personally Id stick with foam mats (£ 5 - £ 15) participation camping Hiking and airmat (around £ 20) if they are not worried about weight, that is, you have a car. The cost of a self-inflating mat far exceeds any benefit compared with the other two options as far as Im concerned. Im sure they have their place and I do not want to offend, but thats my two cents!
