In 2005, natural disasters killed over 25,000 people and caused 57.7 billion U.S. dollars in damage worldwide. Besides the obvious, the direct impact of natural disasters (such as a tornado destroying a house), indirect effects are usually many. Although these effects may be less obvious, are often more costly and can add years to recover after a disaster. As people who live in communities that have been devastated by a natural disaster they say, "no such thing as complete recovery, disaster change people's lives forever."

Disaster Mitigation is the first link chain disaster survival. Mitigation is the process of reducing the severity of impact of natural hazards through planning. Each hazard requires a specific type of mitigation. In some cases, we can use engineering solutions. Of earthquake resistant construction and devices to keep items in place that earthquake belts could at least reduce the impact of natural hazards. In other cases, the only form of mitigation that is guaranteed to be successful is to limit or prohibit human activities in which danger occurs, such as flood plains, volcanoes and areas of high fire risk.

But unfortunately, in some cases, such as Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami, the fact that there was little or no mitigation planning or had its effect in human life. These types of disasters have a profound impact on us all. The prediction of natural disasters has greatly improved, but there is still work to do. Protection against disasters caused by man must continue in a logical, controlled and decisive.

The second link in the chain of survival disaster is personal preparation. The development of plans for evacuation, with proper survival supplies such as water and food has a shelf life of five years, a flashlight that requires no batteries and a radio to stay connected with the outside world is essential for us all. It is suggested that each person at least 72 hours supply. Statistically, the United States citizens are not prepared. Less than 40% of the population has a plan and fewer still have supplies. The list of issues is overwhelming for some people and knowing where to start can be a riddle.

Disasters come in all shapes and change our lives. We have seen firsthand in recent years. In mitigation, preparedness and prediction decreases the loss of lives and property. Each of us must participate in the preparation disaster. Some people say they "expect the unexpected", but in reality, we must anticipate the wait and prepare.
