Why is that only a precious few, as some natural sapphires, show these dramatic color changes, since almost all colored gemstones depends on the nature of enlightenment? The answer is that these gems change color two windows of roughly equal size of transmission. A red gemstone is colored red because it absorbs all frequencies of light except for red. A gemstone which absorbs blue and red light appears when the blue light is rich in blue wavelengths (eg fluorescent light) and red when the light is rich in red wavelengths (eg fluorescent light).
